Seniors Registering at Black Expo Health Fair

Former Executive Director of the Church Federation Dr. Angelique Walker-Smith, now at Bread for the World in Washington, returned to Indy Expo weekend to moderate a seminar on Hunger and Race at the Indiana Statehouse on Expo Saturday.  In an interview with Amos, Dr. Walker-Smith talked about the problems of hunger in America today and why the church and community must be involved.

Leigh Ann Touhy At Black Expo Education Conference

Oasis has been a program that has provided educational and learning opportunities for Indianapolis seniors, fee of charge.  Another positive activity of Oasis is looking for retired individuals to serve as tutors for Indianapolis Public Schools third graders in a number of IPS Schools. Joyce Buntin of Oasis and tutor/volunteer Flora Bryant appeared on Afternoons with Amos Live from Black Expo to talk about the opportunities available fore retired individuals to give 30 minutes of their time twice a week to tutor IPS third graders in reading. Buntin and Bryant also attended Black Expo’s Education Conference and told listeners how they were inspired by the Education Conference keynote speaker Leigh Ann Touhy, the real life mom depicted in the move The Blind Side about a white mother who’s families takes in an underprivileged Black student/athlete.

Omer Eshel of Israel Ministry of Tourism

Have you ever wanted to tour the Holy Land, to see and experience the sights and sounds of what Jesus, the Apostles and the Prophets experienced?  Omer Eshel of the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Israel talked with Afternoons with Amos listeners about touring Israel locations Holy to Christians and those from the world’s two other major religions. Deborah Whitefield and Wes Long or Community Health Network and Meagan Krone of Lilly talked about their company’s support of the Health Fair and Black Expo and what the two companies are going to be doing during the weekend Health Fair activities.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams

(Interview Starts At 1:16:19 Mark On PODCAST Media Player). Dr. Jerome Adams is Commissioner of the Indiana State Department of Health. Dr. Adams is the second African-American to serve as Indiana’s Chief Health Officer.  His predecessor thirty years ago, Dr. Woody Myers, helped create the unique Black Expo Health Fair. In an interview Dr. Adams talked about the commitment from the state and the towards the Health Fair.  Dr. Adams also talked about the HIV crisis in rural Scott County and Madison County in the Indianapolis Metro Area.  Dr. Adams also talked about some of the other health disparities facing Blacks in the state, especially infant mortality.
