A 2009 incident with an Italian photographer has come back to haunt supermodel Naomi Campbell.
An Italian court has convicted the legendary model of assault and issued a suspended sentence of six months, reports Yahoo! Celebrity. The incident stems from a 2009 incident when Campbell was sightseeing with then-boyfriend, Vladimir Doronin. After growing frustrated with photographer Gaetano Di Giovanni for following them around Sicily, she hit him with her bag, scratching his eye. Di Giovanni was reportedly hospitalized for three days.
Her lawyer says they plan to appeal the charges.
“We are appealing the ruling surrounding the 2009 incident. Due to the ongoing legal process, we cannot discuss the matter further at this time,” Guido Carlo Alleva said.
Despite her many accomplishments in the modeling and entertainment industry, Campbell’s violent outbursts have always been at the forefront. The Italian incident is the fourth time she’s been convicted of assault. Since 2000, the model had two complaints against her for throwing a phone at her housekeeper and personal assistant. In 2008, she spat on two officers in London over lost luggage.
In 2013, Campbell opened up about her anger issues and her previous struggle with cocaine. The model says anger management and her journey to sobriety helped heal a lot of wounds.
“Anger is an emotion. There were things I had to deal with. You have to deal with it,” Campbell, 43, says in an interview airing Saturday on Britain’s The Jonathan Ross Show.
Campbell will most likely not face jail time. If the model completes community service and stays out of trouble in the next six months, she will be free to walk the catwalk — and the set of Empire —again.
