The fifth time looks like the charm in the Bears’ search for a new quarterback.

After getting turned down by Trent Green, Damon Huard, Todd Collins, and Josh McCown, the Bears signed former Patriots and Chiefs third-stringer Matt Gutierrez on Wednesday.

Coach Lovie Smith says he has a plan, which probably means a lot of playing time for Jay Cutler and backup Dan LeFevour this week.  It’s hard to imagine Gutierrez being able to step on the field in Mike Martz’s offense Saturday.

While it may seem like a small issue, the second and third-team Bears that have to play with LeFevour and Gutierrez in the preseason won’t get a fair shake to show off their talents.
