Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the Children’s Museum

On Monday, January 17, 2011, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis will celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with special activities from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.  The museum is located at 3000 N. Meridian St. and the activities will be scheduled as follows:

10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Decorate magnets with inspirational quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders and create your own quilt block to add to a multicultural quilt.

10:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., & 12 p.m.   The Griot Drum Ensemble will perform energetic and engaging percussion music in accompaniment with traditional West African and Diaspora drumming.

11 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.    The Broad Ripple High School Dance Ensemble will present a number of modern dance performances.

10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.   Learn about George Washington Carver’s contributions to the field of science in this special hands-on lab session

10 a.m.-1 p.m., 2-4 p.m.  Use Photoshop® Elements to create a stylish Martin Luther King Jr. poster to take home and include a quote about one of your dreams

Various times: View live performances of Ruby’s Story to learn how Ruby’s actions helped her find courage in the face of racism in 1960

Free Health Screenings at Victory Field in Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Experts from Wishard Health Services will be performing free health screenings on Monday, January 17, 2011.  The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside of the stadium with parking available in the Washington St. garage, as well as the parking lots in front of the Indianapolis Zoo and Victory Field.

Conner Prairie

Conner Prairie will be allowing free admittance on Monday, January 17, allowing visitors to learn about the contributions of African Americans to the Civil War.

Indianapolis Zoo

The Indianapolis Zoo will be collecting canned goods in exchange for admission on Monday, where visitors can check out the cold weather animals outside or head indoors to see dolphins, meerkats, and underwater creatures.

Indiana State Museum

The Indiana State Museum will be collecting canned goods in exchange for admission on Monday and throughout the day Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be celebrated with a number of special performances and documentary films.

The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art

The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art will be collecting goods in exchange for admission on Monday.

IUPUI

IUPUI will be hosting the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday – encouraging volunteers to assist a number of community sites across Indianapolis.
