Over 9,000 members Nat’l Society of Black Engineers met in Indy.

Nearly forty years ago a group of African-American engineering students at Purdue formed an association, the National Society of Black Engineers. Now nearly 37,000 strong, NSBE represents Black engineering students and professionals in the country and worldwide.  NSBE gathered in Indianapolis this week for their 39th annual National Convention.  And for the first time a local radio station broadcast live from the NSBE Convention, bringing the issues of increasing the number of African-American engineering students and graduates to the forefront of our community’s consciousness.  In an exclusive broadcast, Afternoons with Amos talked with top leaders of this student run non profit organization talked frankly about why they became engineers.  They talked about the problems of Black students starting in college but not finishing within four to six years.  Of the great disparities of Black engineering students versus graduates.  Of the extremely small numbers of Black female engineering students and graduates.  Guests also talked about NSBE programs in Indianapolis and nationwide to help excite and encourage Black kids to enter STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs.  Guests stressed how important it was for Black youth who want to be engineers to master Chemistry, Calculus and Physics.  Speaking live with Amos were Calvin Young, NSBE National Chair; Carl Mack NSBE Executive Director; Bianca Brown a member of NSBE’s Indianapolis Chapter and Cummins Engine Employee; Whitney Gaskins, Chair and Onte McClendon Member of the NSBE Convention Planning Committee and NSBE Member Renee Sutherland.  Click the Links Below to hear this Informative Broadcast from the NSBE Convention.
