Kelly Price took to social media to vent about a “disheartening” experience following her performance at the Indiana Black Expo Gospel Showcase today. Apparently organizers thought her performance of “As We Lay” was inappropriate for the occasion.According to Kelly,

“I was asked to do my music – not my gospel music – but my music, which is what I did,” she explained in the video (watch above). “After I got off the stage, the lady who was the MC followed behind me and she felt it was necessary to make some comments that indicated to a degree that my performance was inappropriate.”

Kelly called the incident a matter of church bigotry.

“This type of ignorance and this type of church bigotry is ridiculous and is the reason why people won’t come to church,” she said. “I’m very, very angry. This is not right.”

According to a statement by the Indy Black Expo, Kelly was never supposed to perform on the gospel stage and a last minute schedule change forced her to perform closer to the gospel set. The Expo and singer/ producer Rico Love came to her defense.

Certainly seems like a misunderstanding.
