In some business and work settings, office romances are frowned upon and now it looks like Carmel Clay Schools is considering a new policy that would make it a potentially fireable offense to have a “personal relationship” with a subordinate.
According to Indy Star, if approved, the policy would prohibit employees in a romantic or intimate relationship from working in positions that have a “direct, indirect or perceived reporting relationship,” in positions where one person could influence the other’s employment, or in positions where there is a real or perceived “opportunity for collusion.”

According to the policy, the potential change is meant to “avoid actual, potential or perceived favoritism.”
The policy draft further says the district also can determine if other relationships are a conflict of interest.
Currently, Carmel Schools’ policy sets boundaries only for married or cohabiting couples, stating they are not permitted to have direct authority over one another. Current policy also states the district would not hire the spouse or cohabiting significant other of the superintendent.
The board is expected to vote on the new policy during the next school board meeting, on March 26th.
