Arrested on charges of helping her son flee from Texas to Mexico after he violated probation, Ethan Couch‘s mother, Tonya, will have her day in court.
CNN reports that Tonya Couch, whose son has become widely known as the “Affluenza teen,” is expected to appear in court for a hearing in Los Angeles on Tuesday regarding extradition to Texas. She has been charged with hindering the apprehension of a felon.
Authorities set her bail at $1 million, which must be paid in Texas, the report says.
The mother and son were apprehended in Mexico on December 28 after they went missing a few weeks earlier.
Couch, 18, was on probation for killing four people in a 2013 drunk driving crash when he was 16. He grabbed national headlines after a judge sentenced him to probation instead of jail time, “slamming his now-notorious ‘affluenza’ defense — that he was too rich and spoiled to understand the consequences of his actions,” the report says.
Ethan Couch is still in Mexico; when he returns to the United States depends in large part on if he decides to contest his deportation.
His lawyer, prominent Mexican attorney Fernando Benitez, told ABC News that it may be “a couple of months” before he’s deported if he chooses to fight the Mexican government.
Couch was about to be sent back to the United States last week before a Mexican judge granted the teen a temporary stay, which halted the deportation proceedings, according to Benitez.
Benitez told CNN that he is uncertain what Couch wants to do just yet. This ability to “decide what to do” after blatantly violating the law smacks of more White privilege.
