Tornado cleanup is underway in Boone County.  The National Weather Service says the EF-one twister touched down yesterday afternoon near Zionsville. No injuries were reported, but there was quite a bit of property damage.

Homeowners here in Indianapolis are a big step closer to getting their flood insurance back. City leaders say they’re working on a deal with FEMA to fix the city’s troubled flood plain map. FEMA suspended federal flood insurance this month because of problems with the city’s plans. Homeowners Beech Grove, Lawrence, Southport and Speedway are also waiting for the agreement to get their flood insurance back.

Investigators are looking for leads in a pair of unrelated shootings in Indy Thursday night. One left a man with a bullet wound to his hand, the other sent a man to the hospital with a bullet in his head. IMPD commanders say they’re looking for suspects in both shootings.

Public Sector Unions Rally Against Proposed Pension Changes In Maryland

Now to labor and politics….The United Steel Workers Union–USW– is holding a march and rally today to protest the layoffs at Carrier Corporation. Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders is planning to be there. The event will take place at Noon today on the south lawn of the Indiana Statehouse. Sanders is expected to talk about Carrier’s controversial plan to move most of its Indiana jobs out of the country to Mexico. Others expected to attend the rally today to speak are Congressman Andre’ Carson and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton will not be here today but her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, will be. The younger Clinton will make a stop at her mother’s campaign office in the 7200 block of North Keystone Avenue this afternoon from 3 to 4 p.m.

Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz is expected to campaign here in Indy and in southern Indiana today. He’s scheduled to make an appearance with his running mate Carly Fiorina at 10 a.m. downtown at the Indiana War Memorial then later at Kye’s on Missouri Avenue in Jeffersonville at 3:30 p.m.

Former House Speaker John Boehner has a low opinion of presidential candidate Ted Cruz. This week, Boehner called Cruz a profanity out of his name (“a miserable SOB”). Earlier, he called him “Lucifer in the flesh. ” Boehner blames Cruz for riling up House conservatives and prompting the infamous government shutdown of 2013.

Donald Trump is continuing to bring in large crowds ahead of next week’s Indiana primary. The Republican front-runner drew 12,000 people to a rally in Evansville Thursday and told them he will win Tuesday’s primary. If Trump wins Indiana, he’ll take a huge step toward winning enough delegates to wrap up the nomination before the Republican convention in Cleveland this summer.

Minnesota police have a search warrant for the home and studio of music legend Prince. A judge has agreed to keep the results of the search secret for 180 days, or until the start of court proceedings, whichever comes first. This is now a criminal probe. Prince reportedly had prescription painkiller medication on him when he died. The warrant is for the Paisley Park studios, the singer/musician’s home outside Minneapolis. Prince was found dead there alone in an elevator on April 21.

In sports…

The Indianapolis Colts selected Alabama center Ryan Kelly in the first round of last night’s NFL Draft.  Kelly won the Rimington Trophy last year as the best center in college football.  The NFL Draft continues tonight from Chicago with rounds two and three.

This is it for the Pacers tonight… win or go home. The Raptors are in town tonight for Game Six of the first round NBA playoff series. The Pacers trail the set three games to two and needs to win out to advance.  Pacers forward Paul George has made it known he’s willing to do whatever to win tonight, including playing all 48 minutes. Tip-off from Bankers Life Fieldhouse is at 7:30 p.m.

Fever forward Tamika Catchings has been chosen by USA Basketball to play in the Rio Olympics this summer. She’ll be the oldest American woman ever to play basketball in the Olympics. Catchings previously won gold with Team USA in 2004, 2008 and 2012. The American women have not lost an Olympic basketball game since 1992.

From ‘Lemonading’ and twerking with Beyonce’ to now missing this weekend’s Madrid Open, tennis superstar Serena Williams will miss the tourney because of illness. The tournament says Williams won’t be able to play because of a fever that has left her feeling ”less than 100 percent.” Williams won the Madrid Open in 2012 and 2013.

Amos Brown Memories

The 100 block of Saint Joseph Street may be renamed “Amos Brown Way.” A City Council committee voted unanimously Thursday to honor the radio pioneer and civil rights activist who worked here at the stations of WTLC, Hoosier Radio & TV and Radio One. The full council will vote on the proposal May 9. Brown also served as a columnist for The Indianapolis Recorder newspaper. The 100 block of St. Joseph Street was chosen because its the location of his radio stations, Radio One-Indianapolis. Brown passed away in November 2015.
