If you turned off the television after La La Land was named Best Picture at the Oscars last night, you may have missed the greatest mistake in Oscar history.  We’re talking Steve Harvey at the Miss Universe pageant kind of mistake, where the wrong winner was announced.

Presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were apparently handed the wrong envelope. They announced Damien Chazelle’s musical La La Land as the winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, when the actual winner was Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight.

The La La Land cast and crew were on stage celebrating what seemed to be their win for Best Picture, when producer Fred Berger interrupted his own acceptance speech to tell the audience, “we lost, by the way.”  Fellow producer, Jordan Horowitz then stepped up to the microphone as he showed the correct winner card to the crowd, and explained that Moonlight was in fact the winner.

As the cast and crew of Moonlight were slowly making their way to the stage, host Jimmy Kimmel tried to make light of the awkward situation by joking that he blamed Steve Harvey for the mix up.  Warren Beatty also took the opportunity to apologize, and explain he was handed a card that read “Emma Stone, La La Land.”

Congratulations to Moonlight!  Check out what happened in the video below.
