The Cleveland Cavaliers are the 2016 NBA champions. The Cavs beat the Golden State Warriors Sunday night on the road, 93-to-89, to win Game Seven and claiming the team’s first-ever NBA title—also the first team ever to win a  series coming from behind with a three-game deficit. The city is jubilant, on top of the world, and getting into official party mode. The official city-wide celebration is scheduled for the Cavaliers and MVP LeBron James on Wednesday. As of now, the city is not releasing specific details.

Here at home…

An early morning police chase across several counties has ended in an arrest. Police say one man is in custody after this chase started with a robbery at a Tippecanoe County gas station and headed down I-65. Boone County Sheriff spotted the suspect’s grey car and pursued. So the chase went across Boone, into Marion County and back north into Hamilton County. Police believe the same as-yet-to-be identified man is responsible for several recent gas station hold-ups. They arrested him finally in Sheridan and he’s now booked into the Boone County Jail.

Indianapolis Metro Police officers say the department’s largest crime sweep netted more than two dozens arrests and hopefully some answers. Close to 150 IMPD officers swept across the city Saturday. Commanders say they made 26 arrests and also detained a number of people sought as part of multiple active investigations.

John Gregg

Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Gregg says if he becomes governor, Indiana will stop fighting about social issues because he says it’s only holding the state back. He and his running mate, State Representative Christina Hale spoke at the weekend’s state Democratic Convention, held in Indy. Hale told the Dems gathered, that Indiana’s fight over same sex marriage and gender specific bathrooms has turned the state into an embarrassment. Congressman Andre Carson, came home from Capitol Hill to speak to the party faithful attempting to heal with a message for Senator Bernie Sanders’ supporters in Sanders unsuccessful bid for president. According to The Indianapolis Star, Carson said, “We cannot let our disagreements pave the way for a demagogue.” He was clearly referring to presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. Carson is working to unify Democrats in the state to back presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton ahead of the national party convention next month in Philadelphia.

LOVE Sculpture at IMA by Robert Indiana

Orlando remembers… One week after a deadly attack at a gay dance club, mourners there, held a candle-light vigil Sunday to honor the 49 people killed and over 50 injured in the massacre. The gathering at Orlando’s Lake Eola Park featured community and religious leaders, including Imam Muhammad Musri. Musri denounced the attack and called gunman Omar Mateen a “brutal aggressor and mass murderer” who doesn’t represent Islam. It was an emotional vigil where often the chant, “We Love Pulse” pierced the air and the sound of weeping. To end the event, the names of the victims were read, followed by a moment of silence. While they remembered lives lost on the ground in Orlando, the city where the ‘deadliest mass public shooting in modern U.S. history’ happened, here in Indy, Indy supports…  The community gathered at the Indianapolis Museum of Art near the iconic LOVE sculpture for a picnic, creative arts healing celebration and to take an aerial photo around the sculpture. Organizers, Indy Pride, Inc. and the IMA are sending the LOVE photo and other well-wishes crafted at the event to Orlando to support and help heal. Guns and the laws that govern them are in the spotlight in the Senate today after the deadly mass shooting in Orlando. Republican leaders agreed to hold procedural votes on four measures late in the day after a Democratic filibuster last week. Two Democratic measures aim to expand background checks and prevent terror suspects from being able to buy guns. Republicans added two competing measures aimed at protecting gun owners’ rights and focusing more attention on terrorism.

The 9-1-1 call made by the gunman during the Orlando mass shooting will be made public.  U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch says limited transcripts of the three calls made by Omar Mateen will be released today.  She says transcripts will be limited to avoid victims reliving the attack.

Donald Trump says the United States should consider more racial profiling when it comes to Muslims in America. On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” the likely GOP presidential nominee said he hates the concept of profiling but doesn’t believe it’s the worst thing to do. In other Trump news, he is firing his campaign manager. Trump is parting ways with Corey Lewandowski just as Trump faces growing concerns from his supporters about the stability of his campaign. In a statement out this Monday morning, the Trump Campaign announced Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign.

Guns are also the topic in Connecticut. A federal judge there is hearing arguments on whether a gun maker can be sued in connection with the Sandy Hook massacre. Gun companies argue they are immune from being sued for the actions of the people who buy their products. Lawyers for nine victims’ families and one survivor argue certain types of semi-automatic weapons should not be in the hands of civilians. In December 2014, 20 children and six staffers were fatally shot by a lone gunman in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The ruling may be of special interest to the families of the victims in Charleston, South Carolina where nine people were slaughtered in a shooting massacre during bible study at Emanuel AME Church. The one year anniversary of that massacre was last Friday.

Closing arguments begin today in the latest Freddie Gray-related trial. Baltimore Police Officer Caesar Goodson is facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of Gray, who suffered a severe spinal injury in the back of a police van last year. On Friday, the defense called on fellow police officer Edward Nero, who testified that Gray was combative with officers and later heard loud banging coming from inside the van. Goodson did not testify.

Ticketmaster is going to be giving out tickets to free shows. As part of a class-action lawsuit over inflated fees that was settled last month, the company will be compensating about 50-million people with free ticket vouchers. Eligibility for customers includes those who bought tickets through the site between October 1999 and February of 2013.

In Sports…

Yes the Cleveland Cavaliers are the NBA Champs as I told you in the lead story. Speaking of superstar player LeBron James, the series MVP has made good on a promise he made to his hometown. That promise was to bring a championship title to Cleveland. It’s the first time in 52 years that the city has had a major professional sports champion which was 1964 with the Browns. James and the Cavs went through last year’s champ, the Warriors, stopping their ‘favored’ status on the road to a repeat, to do so. There’s a reason they call Cleveland “Believeland” apparently.

It could take until the 2018 football season, but IU athletics officials are excited about the new roof, planned for their football stadium. University Trustees approved the $53-million project last week. The money will all come from the school’s athletic fund.

Tina Charles scored a game-high 26 points as the New York Liberty captured a victory over the Indiana Fever, 78-75, before a Father’s Day crowd gathered at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Tamika Catchings led the Fever with 23 points. Erlana Larkins added 10 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. The Fever’s record dropped to 5-and-8 with a loss of the last four of five. The Fever hit the road to Washington DC on Wednesday to take on the Mystics.

Weather…

Partly to mostly cloudy today. A stray severe thunderstorm is possible. The High: 93 degrees.
